Determining the Required Safety Level (SIL/PL) and Assessing the Achieved Safety/Performance Level
When designing new facilities or modernizing old production lines, it is important to note that electronic and automated safety devices (e.g., emergency stop switches, automatic interlock devices, safety curtains, and other functional safety devices) are integral safety components of the production equipment.
Taking into account the required safety level identified during the risk assessment, the compliance of the functional safety system with applicable standards (e.g., ISO 13849) must be assessed and appropriately declared.
