Slip Resistance Tests on Wet Surfaces

Slip Resistance Testing of Wet Surfaces Slip resistance testing of swimming pools, spas, saunas, showers, and other wet surfaces using the pendulum method

Wet floors and other walkable surfaces can become slippery and pose a risk of slipping and injury. This is particularly relevant in areas where surfaces are constantly or periodically exposed to water and are frequently walked on barefoot—such as in swimming pools, spa and sauna areas, showers, locker rooms, poolside areas, and water recreation areas.

We conduct slip resistance tests on wet surfaces using the pendulum method (Pendulum Test). During these tests, we evaluate the actual slip characteristics of the installed surface and determine whether the surface provides adequate slip resistance.

Where are skid resistance tests conducted?

We can conduct tests in various wet areas and areas with an increased risk of slipping:

  • in and around swimming pools;
  • At spas and wellness centers;
  • in saunas and their surrounding areas;
  • in showers and washrooms;
  • in the locker rooms;
  • at water parks and water recreation areas;
  • in hotels and sports centers;
  • on ceramic tiles, stone, and other floor coverings;
  • in other locations where the surface may be wet during operation.

Pendulum Test

Slip resistance is determined using a pendulum tester. The test allows for an objective assessment of a surface’s slip properties and determines the PTV (Pendulum Test Value).

One of the advantages of this method is the ability to take measurements on-site on existing surfaces, making it possible to evaluate not only new materials under laboratory conditions, but also surfaces in swimming pools, spas, saunas, and other facilities that are actually in use.

Tests may be conducted taking into account the conditions of surface use, including an assessment of wet surfaces.

EN 16165 Slip Resistance Tests

The pendulum test is conducted in accordance with the provisions of EN 16165, “Determination of the slip resistance of pedestrian walking surfaces—Test methods.”

Why is it important to conduct slip resistance tests?

This test allows for an objective assessment of whether a selected or already installed floor covering has appropriate slip resistance properties. This is relevant both when installing new swimming pools, spas, and other wet areas, and when evaluating facilities already in use.

The test results can be used:

  • to evaluate the properties of floor coverings;
  • to compare different coatings or surface treatment methods;
  • to monitor the condition of the surface during operation;
  • to evaluate the changes that have occurred after the surface has been cleaned, impregnated, or otherwise treated;
  • for assessing the risk of slipping;
  • to support the decisions of the client, the designer, or the facility manager.

Who is this service intended for?

Slip resistance testing is relevant for swimming pool and spa operators, hotels, sports and wellness centers, water parks, municipalities, construction contractors, designers, flooring manufacturers and suppliers, and building managers.

Tests can be conducted both before a facility is handed over or a surface is selected, and at a facility that is already in operation.
