Internal combustion engine replacement
Assessment of Engine Interchangeability
Engine Interchangeability Requirements:
- the engine's displacement must not differ from that of the previous engine by more than 20 percent;
- the engine's power must not differ from that of the previous engine by more than 30 percent;
- Emissions levels must meet requirements under EURO standards that are no less stringent than those for the original engine;
- Replacing an engine with one that operates on a different principle (from compression ignition to spark ignition, or vice versa) is possible only after agreeing with the manufacturer on the replacement conditions regarding the fuel, exhaust, brake, and steering systems;
- Emissions from a newly installed engine must be controlled by an OBD system if such a system is required for the vehicle;
- If a vehicle’s emission level meets at least the EURO 3 standard, its exhaust system must be equipped with exhaust gas treatment equipment (a catalytic converter and/or a particulate filter);
- If speed-limiting regulations apply to the vehicle, the vehicle must comply with the requirements of those regulations after modification;
- The replacement of engines in safe vehicles (those with an ETMK certificate) is permitted only after coordinating the details of such a replacement with the vehicle manufacturer;
- Modifications to a vehicle must not compromise its active and passive safety, the strength and reliability of its structural components and fastenings, or result in a deterioration of environmental performance, the ergonomics of the driver's workstation, or the conditions for transporting passengers and cargo.
The following documents must be submitted for the technical inspection:
- proof of purchase of the engine;
- if custom-made connecting parts were used to assemble the engine and components, drawings or sketches of these parts. These drawings may be replaced by photographs of the mating surfaces and custom-made parts taken prior to assembly;
- a document issued by the manufacturer's authorized representative confirming the correct configuration of the engine's intake and exhaust systems (if the expert is unable to determine this);
- a certificate stating that the vehicle’s OBD systems are functioning properly. This certificate may be issued by companies that have signed a cooperation agreement with TUV NORD Lithuania (more >>).
NOTE: Before replacing the engine, please consult with our experts regarding the terms and conditions for engine replacement and the required documents.
Cases in Which Engine Replacement Is Prohibited
In accordance with Appendix 2 of the Procedure for the Manufacture and Recycling of Motor Vehicles and Their Trailers and for the Conduct of Technical Inspections (more >>), replacing the engine with another is prohibited if:
the engine is replaced with another engine whose displacement is more than 20 percent greater or whose power output is more than 30 percent greater;
the engine is replaced with another engine, the installation of which requires modifications to the vehicle's load-bearing structures;
The engine is replaced with another engine, the installation of which may cause the load on the axles to exceed the permissible limit.
